Episode 09: This Is The End
We break through doors, meet old friends and find a very interesting conclusion. This is the end of Downfall.
Game Horror Rating: ☠ (1/5 Skulls)
Game Review: ★★★★ (4/5 Stars)
First off: For all of you Cat Lady lovers – if you are looking for a game that matches your favorite game, you might be disappointed. Downfall is, in comparison to its Cat Lady relative, rather short. What you’ll find is a very interesting, extremely abstract game starring Joe Davis – a resident of beloved Cat Lady’s home house.
The story follows Joe Davis and his wife as they attempt to mend a broken marriage with a weekend in a hotel, where we soon find out things aren’t quite normal. There really isn’t too much more I can say about the story without spoiling it for anyone, so I’ll leave it at that.
On occasion the game can be rather disturbing, which in my honest opinion is part of what makes it a great game, however I kind of missed the clear message at the end of the game which I was hoping for and which was present in The Cat Lady. While the game obviously targets mental disorders, in particular I felt a relation to Bulimia, the clear final act that puts things into perspective was somewhat missing. In addition with its extremely abstract story and design, it was quite unclear to me what exactly the message was.
This is still an extremely good story based game with its disturbing moments, its gore and its elaborate story, but it can unfortunately not match my personal favorite: The Cat Lady.
